Thokozile was born in Jackson (dad is from Zimbabwe, hence her name) and has been styling hair for about 15 years. She got into cosmetology after being forced by her mother to pick up a trade. Thokozile says that in high school, she focused a lot on boys and her mother wanted to make sure she developed skills that would pay off in the event her life took any unexpected directions.
“She put me in the CDC program and I ended up taking cosmetology. I didn’t have a clue how to curl hair, roll hair or do anything with hair. I did end up getting pregnant while in the program, so my senior year I finished up at Shirley Little (local cosmetology school).”
Although she had finished her program, picked up a skill, her father wanted her to do more. “My father is African and he’s really big on education so he wanted me to go to college,” she tells us. She enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi and obtained a degree in business.
It turned out to be a smart move. After working at two salons, with her knowledge of business and exceptional hairstyling skills, she opened up Red Carpet Ready Salon earlier this year. The salon is located on North State Street next to Posh Boutique in the Fondren area of Jackson.
Red Carpet Ready Salon is also the featured black business this Friday at the Martini Room in Jackson, so come out for your chance to meet Thokozile and win gifts and prizes.
