Fashion designer Dania Carter of Pearl, Mississippi spoke with JessicaSimien.com recently for Mississippi Month. The 24-year-old Mississippi State University graduate (Fashion Design and Business) is on her way to becoming one of the state’s well known fashion designers.
I must say that I loved talking with Dania. She has a very relaxed, down to earth personality and her southern accent is the cutest! Read her interview with us and be sure to check out her work.
JS: What does fashion mean to you? I know everyone has their different definitions of fashion and style, but I’d like to know what it means to you.
DC: Fashion in my opinion is all about expressing your own personality. A lot of people try to follow trends, but I don’t. I like being true to myself and dressing the way I feel.
JS: What do you think about fashion in Mississippi?
DC: People here…they do have their own style, but many are scared to go outside of the box because of what people might think. From living in D.C. and traveling to other places, I notice that the people there are individuals. They don’t care about what other people think. So yeah, people here have style…they just need to go more out of the box. That’s what I’m hoping to bring with my own line.
JS: So what made you want to become a fashion designer? Have you always been interested in it, or did you “fall into it” like some people do?
DC: Well, I honestly can say that I did not always want to be in fashion. I grew up as a tomboy working with my dad hauling wood. When I went to State my major was supposed to be Photography but I happened to run into this girl who was a fashion major and I just remember seeing what she was doing and thinking it was so cool. I pretty much started there.
From then on, I just kept at it. Once you feel like you’ve found your passion and your niche, the rest will come.
JS: Now we can talk about your clothing line. Do you have a name for it?
DC: I’m working on a name, it’s gonna be very random. I want it to be random ’cause that’s just the type of person I am. I’ve been working on it for awhile, I just want to make sure I have all the details together. My first line has to be amazing.
While we wait for Dania’s line to be released, check out some of her work below.
